Bright, 28, announced Monday her Democratic candidacy for the job that pays $39,302 a year. Bright 'faces primary opposition from Odessa attorney M. Dolores Abalos, 29. The winner of the primary will face Assistant District Attorney Roger Jones, 41, the sole Republican in the race. Ector County Attorney Gary Garrison is seeking the district attorney post.
Bright said she leans toward placing first-time DWI misdemeanor offenders on probation because the Ector County Adult Probation Office has successfully guided 85 percent of its probationers through their sentences with an offering of drug and alcohol dependency tests and counseling. However, Bright siad she wants second-time offenders to do jail time. "Repeat offenders must be treated differently, must be harsher," she said. Bright said offenders who violate probation shouldn't expect a short three- or five-day stay in jail on a plea bargain, but should serve their sentence. Bright said she would recoup an estimated monthly loss of $3,000 in uncollected fines for bond revocations.
While working as an assistant county attorney from February 1985 to September 1986, Bright said more than $9,000 was collected from people in a three-month period who had their bond revoked. For 1987, Bright said $3,475 was collected. "People are not showing up and bond forfeitures are not being collected," she said. A 1977 Permian High School graduate, Bright received her law degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. She practices trial law in her own office at 409 N.

Cullen Davis in a wrongful death suit, is no longer a settlement, Priscilla Davis says. The announcement of the non-settlement came Monday night during a meeting of the Fort worth chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. Priscilla Davis, who spoke at the meeting about her plans to write a book and sell a screenplay about her life, said the settlement is off because Davis and his lawyers broached the agreement by announcing details of the settlement to the news media. The settlement had been in a personal injury and wrongful death suit Priscilla Davis had filed against her ex-husband in connection with the shootings at the Davis mansion Aug.
