If you’re a bit of a coffee snob (it’s OK, you can admit it — we are, too), you know that the Spanish really love their coffee, and if you ever find yourself in the country, you probably won’t have to search too hard to find a good cup of coffee.

But hopping on a plane to Spain just to go on a coffee-tasting tour isn’t the most feasible option, so bring a taste of the country to your kitchen by making a variation of Spanish coffee yourself.

Meet the sweet Spanish latte.

WHAT IS A SPANISH LATTE?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of information available about the origins of the Spanish latte, but we do know that the espresso-based beverage is made with both regular milk and condensed milk. It’s sweeter than a normal latte, but not quite as sweet as one with flavored syrup added.

It’s believed to be a variation of Vietnamese coffee — and it tastes pretty similar, too — but a Spanish latte uses more condensed milk than its Vietnamese counterpart.

You probably already guessed by its name that this latte originated in Spain, and it’s not unpopular for Spaniards to enjoy this latte with breakfast, but now, it’s become a popular choice in coffee shops inSaudi Arabia, Latin America, and certain parts of Florida…and after giving this recipe a try, this creamy coffee drink could become a popular choice in your own home.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 shot of espresso
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1-2 teaspoons of sugar or condensed milk

THE PROCESS:

Step 1:

The first thing you’ll need to do is fire up your espresso machine, of course! Make sure you use strong coffee to pull your espresso shot, and for the best-tasting result, whip out your conical burr grinder and use freshly ground coffee beans.

Step 2:

While the espresso is brewing, pour half a cup of your favorite milk into a steaming pitcher and use a steaming wand to create warm frothy milk. If your coffee machine doesn’t have a built-in steaming wand, don’t fret; there are ways to create milk foam without one — check out our tipshere!

Step 3:

Pour your espresso into a mug, then add the fluffy, hot milk on top of the coffee.
