    Lived Experience & Wellbeing Project

    Summary

This project examines the effects of work-related stress (WRS) on pilot wellbeing and the associated impact on both pilot performance and flight safety. Further our research addresses solutions to WRS both an airline and pilot self-management level. This includes tools to promote stress coping, wellbeing awareness and management and risk assessment for WRS/wellbeing. This research is independent and is not linked to any airline, pilot group or the regulator.

    Alicia

    Summary

ALICIA addresses the ACARE objective of increasing time efficiency within the future air transport system. The aim will be to develop a new and scalable co*ckpit application which can extend operations of aircraft in degraded conditions - "All Conditions Operations". A key objective will be to deliver an extensible application that can be applied to many aircraft types. This will necessarily entail a new co*ckpit infrastructure capable of delivering enhanced situation awareness to the crew whilst simultaneously reducing crew workload and improving overall aircraft safety. Specifically Joan's research involves the operational analysis/validation of future co*ckpit concepts/technologies.

    Human Factors & Ethics Canvas

    Summary

Overall, we need methodologies to support the production and documentation of evidence in relation to addressing the human and ethical dimensions of future technologies. The responsibilities of designers and questions concerning the moral quality of technology belong to the field of Applied Ethics. However, they also belong to the field of Human Factors. The objective of the 'human factors and ethics' canvas project is document methodolgoies for the production of this canvas. We hope to demonstrate how HF methodlogoies can be integrated with concepts in applied ethics, to create an evidence map in relation to the specification of an ethically responsible technology solution that properly addresses relevant human and ethical issues.

HILAS - Human Integration into the Lifecycle of Aviation Systems

    Summary

The HILAS project ran for the last four years (2005 to 2009). The Human Integration into the Lifecycle of Aviation Systems (HILAS) project is part of the Sixth Framework Programme for aeronautics and space research, sponsored by the European Commission. The objective of the HILAS project is to develop a model of good practice for the integration of human factors across the life-cycle of aviation systems. The project contains four parallel strands of work: the integration and management of human factors knowledge; the flight operations environment and performance; the evaluation of new flight deck technologies, and the monitoring and assessment of maintenance operations (HILAS Annex One, 2005). The Flight Operations strand comprises seven European airlines, human factors researchers and technology partners. The critical objective of this strand is to develop and implement a new methodology for monitoring and evaluating overall system performance to support improved information sharing, performance management, operational risk management and process improvement. The project involves a number of phases of research including identifying the requirements for the proposed system, building the system and iterative trailing and evaluation of the system. Joan's research in the HILAS project focused on the Flight Operations Strand. Specifically her research involved identifying the requirements for improved airline processes and technology tools, supporting a number of operational and organisational functions including operations management, performance management, safety/risk management, organisational learning and knowledge integration. As part of this, Joan worked on the development of improved Flight Crew tools, providing a range of task support, performance feedback and reporting functions, linked to the above processes and technology tools.

Applying Pilot Models for Safer Operations

    Summary

The A-PiMod project addresses improved flight safety by proposing a new approach to human cantered co*ckpit design, which expands the understanding of the human factor in the joint human-machine system, taking into account increasing levels of operational complexity and new operational concepts (SESAR). The project will advance concepts for a fully adaptive and human cantered automation, through the integration of Pilot behavioural and cognitive models with automation models â€" resulting in the generation of real time inferences about the Pilot state and mental picture. With this capability it will be able to support, in an adaptive and cooperative way, the total set of functions (both human and automation) necessary to the achievement of a safe flight under a performance driven ATM system (SESAR).

    Wing Watch

    Summary

This project is sponsored by Enterprise Ireland - the Irish government organisation responsible for the development and growth of Irish enterprises in world markets. The objective of the WW project is to advance a 'proof of concept' demonstration of a collision warning system, for use by Pilots operating on the airport ramp and in taxiway areas. Following proof of concept, the proposed system will be further developed for other ramp users (i.e. Tow Truck Driver, ATC and Ground Marshaller). The project involves two integrated strands of research. The first strand concerns the identification of the user requirements for the proposed tool and modelling of the associated HCI design concept. The second strand relates to the advancement of the underlying vision based collision detection and avoidance technology, and the allied technical specification and implementation of the proposed system. Primarily, this involves research in the area of visual mapping and robotics. The project commenced in 2007 and is due to finish in 2011. The specific objective of HCI research is (1) to identify the user requirements for a co*ckpit based version of the proposed system, and (2) to model a preliminary version of the associated HCI design concept.

    New Technologies Supporting Assisted Living

    Summary

The objective of this research is to advance new Assisted Living (AL) technology enabling independent living and quality of life for elders aged between 55 and 90 years. This research is an industry/academia collaboration and will contribute to specification and validation of a future AL product for seniors. Overall, this research is underscored by several key principles: 1. Technology use/function is predicated on biopsychosocial models of well-being 2. Independence for seniors is linked to interdependence (i.e. support from other actors in personal and professional community) 3. Technology will be developed from the perspective of understanding, modelling and transforming the social, information and healthcare process relationships between seniors and associated stakeholders 4. The research will pay specific attention to issues of user acceptability and ethics (rights based framework), ease of use, and adaptability in relation to age and condition
